Elliot Markuson
Elliot Markuson is rehabbing to qualify for the 2026 Winter Games as a member of Team USA men’s bobsled.
Markuson played college football as a linebacker at Ole Miss. His father, Mike Markuson, was appointed offensive line coach in 2008, coming to the Rebels from the University of Arkansas. Elliot grew up immersed in college football, and he says that he and his sister joke that they never had a normal Christmas because of bowl season. Elliot takes pride in being a “sports diplomat,” having taught English and American football in China following his undergrad.

“I tell my teammates now and other USOPC athletes that if there’s ever anything that you need or you’re put in a situation similar to mine, then seriously, UF Health took care of me, took care of everything. It’s top-notch service.”
After his return to the U.S., Elliot tried out for, and was accepted to, the Team USA bobsled team, where he puts his team leadership skills to work as the brakeman — he’s the last man to jump in the sled as it hurtles down the track at 90 mph. His full-time job is with the nonprofit organization FHI 360 as a program officer, working with people from other nations to create stronger diplomatic connections between the U.S. and foreign countries through sports.
Health concern
Elliot was referred to UF Health by USOP for chronic hip pain and had hip surgery with Dr. Ryan Roach on Dec. 29, 2023. He said the USOP offered him three options for the surgery: two hospitals located out west or UF Health. He chose UF Health because as he put it, “The Gators are in the SEC, and they’re my people!” Elliot had a torn labrum and an impingement that Dr. Roach corrected. He is now rehabbing in preparation to qualify for the 2026 Winter Games as a member of Team USA men’s bobsled.
